covenants with god

Melinnenia ago Abraham made covenants with God. He promised absolute obedience. God promised power that through his descendants all mankind will be blessed. Through his descendants Jesus Christ would be born, by Mary. And from there His message would go forward, first to the Jews and from them to all the world. 

What does all this have to do with me? Through Abraham I have been given the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have been given the ability to make covenants with God myself. Baptism, partaking of the sacrament, receiving the priesthood, and entering the temple each have covenants I make. Because of the restoration of the true Church of Jesus Christ these ordinances have eternal power that takes me beyond the grave. I promise God obedience in certain areas of my life. God promises me power to succeed at what is eternally important. Covenants are God's way of elevating us.
