Millennia ago, Abraham made covenants with God, promising perfect obedience. God promised blessings for all mankind through his descendants. Jesus Christ was born to Mary from his lineage, allowing the gospel message to reach the Jews first and then the world.
What does this mean for me? Through Abraham, Jesus Christ was born. I have received the gospel of Jesus Christ and the opportunity to make covenants with God, such as baptism, the sacrament, receiving the priesthood, and temple covenants. Because of the restoration of The Church of Jesus Christ, these ordinances have eternal power that endures beyond the grave. As I promise obedience to God, He empowers me to succeed in what is eternally important. Whenever we covenant with God, He gives us additional power to do good.
Covenants with God are a part of how He elevates us. Covenants make us better. When we promise God a certain level of obedience He promises us a certain level of power. This is a power against evil. It is a power to overcome our faults. It is a power to make the world different. On the ship of mortality those who do not make these covenants are the passengers. When one makes these covenants he becomes a member of the crew. He is now responsible for others to find a better way. As a member of the crew you are expected to behave differently than those around you.
